Personal Growth Recommendations
Personal growth and feeding myself with positive information is a key to starting off my day right. I spend a lot of time in my car commuting 25 minutes each way during the school year to my teaching job. I have grown to love devouring audiobooks and podcasts in that timeframe each day. Also, if I need to pass time in the car as a passenger, or before bed and I need to wind down, I do like to read on my Kindle app on my phone. I’m going to recommend some of my favorites below.
Atomic Habits by James Clear – I just started this book, so I’ve had to stop and take notes so far! “The problem isn’t your goals, it’s your systems. You don’t rise to the level of your goals, you rise to the level of your systems. True change happens not when your behavior changes, but when you change your identity. The more you repeat a behavior, the more it becomes your identity. Decide who you want to be, and then practice it.” I’m only on Chapter 3!
The 3 Day Effect by Florence Williams – This is a shorter audiobook that is exclusive to Audible and free this month for subscribers. The book does studies on how nature can be healing and lower anxiety. The author describes how this “magic” really happens after spending 3 days in nature.
The 5AM Club: Own Your Morning, Elevate Your Life by Robin Sharma – I LOVE this book. It has an amazing PDF that came with the book. Robin talks about the 20/20/20 principle, and the 66 day implementation process of these concepts.
The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma – This book is a simple fable that is told with some powerful principles to help put life into perspective. I really enjoyed this audiobook as it was very grounding and helpful.
Love Does by Bob Goff – This is a super book about how Love Does. Bob walks you through so many visual stories that really help apply some awesome principles about demonstrating the love of Christ.
Fit for Life: Think it, Do it, Believe it by Saba Moor-Doucette – This book is what really got me on the affirmation train. I have to start putting this into practice. This older lady is a rockstar. Her voice is so cute in the book. She basically went from a 60 year old older lady to a bikini fitness model.
The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes – He has an excellent podcast, my 2nd favorite podcast, but this is his book. He is a former athlete and now brilliant business owner. I really enjoyed hearing his story of how he got where he is now.
Living With The Monks by Jesse Itzler – I LOVE this guy. He is so funny! I am pretty sure he is my age and he just rocks at life! In this book, he writes about his tenure when he went to live with monks for two weeks. It’s so great, it’s awesome how he was able to disconnect, learn to meditate, be by himself, and all he learned.
Living With A Seal by Jesse Itzler – I had to have another experience with Jesse. This time, he has a Navy Seal come live with him. It is crazy what all they accomplish in a day when he is there. The training is insane. The SEAL is a true minimalist and just a super guy. Jesse is so entertaining, you will laugh out loud through a lot of it; he is just an awesome storyteller.
Eat and Run by Scott Jurek – Scott is an Ultramarathoner who has done some amazing feats. He has an incredible story. He also does all of this on a plant based diet.
The TB12 Method by Tom Brady – As a Colts fan, it’s sac-religious that I even purchased this book. lol But, I now have a lot of respect for the athlete that Tom is competing in the NFL at a crazy successful level at my age. I learned a lot about recovery, pliability, and even the importance of exercising your brain daily. If I had a dollar every time I heard “so my muscles are long and pliable,” I could buy this book for everyone, but it had some good stuff in it for sure!
Everybody Always by Bob Goff – Another great book by Bob. He just sounds like the sweetest man, and the book just reminds you that everyone is one of God’s creation and how to show them love.
How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie – This book is a golden oldie. It is full of honestly common sense of how to treat people, but it was a good reminder!
Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willik and Leif Babin – This book should be required for anyone who is in a leadership role. It is written by Navy SEALS and it is so good about taking responsibility and being an amazing leader.
Head Strong by Dave Asprey – This book was really interesting and very scientific. It gives a really detailed explanation of some bio hacks to improve your performance and energy by brain science.
Own the Moment by Carl Lentz – This is my all time favorite book at the current time. Carl is a super down to earth Hillsong Pastor in New York City. I laughed, and cried during this book. It has some amazing things in it.
I use the Audible app to listen to these audiobooks. I have the Gold plan, and get 1 credit a month, or 1 free book a month for $14.95. They also have a selection that are free books with that subscription, you can pick 2 of those a month. They also send me a special book at a special price each day, and sometimes I capitalize on those. It takes me awhile to get through audiobooks, so I’ve found the Gold plan to be just right for me.
Model Health Show by Shawn Stephenson – This podcast is great for all types of health information. Shawn is great, he is the author of a great book called Sleep Smarter. He also has on some great guest speakers.
The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes – I summarized his book earlier, and his podcast is great too. His voice was too much for me in the beginning, but his content and his story won me over for sure. He has had some great guest speakers on as well that have lead me to a lot of other great books and information.
Podcasts can be found on ITunes on Apple products; on Android devices, there is an app called Stitcher and you can use Spotify. Also, if you go to the two above podcasts, you can listen to their shows from their website as well.
